‘On a late December morning I arrived at Whitley Bay beach to find the stormy winter seas had washed up large banks of tangled kelp. Overnight, sub-zero temperatures had dusted the kelp in a light frost, helping to accentuate their form.
The biggest challenge in making this image was quickly finding a pleasing composition amongst the vast heaps of kelp before the sun thawed the frost. I visualised the central tangle to be the frozen heart of some kind of mythical sea creature. In post processing I wanted to create a dark sci-fi feel reminiscent of work by the artist H.R. Giger. To do this I desaturated the image and introduced cold blue tones, whilst boosting contrast and clarity.’
