‘I am a PhD student in Materials Science and Engineering at Northwestern University, USA. The image was taken for one of my research projects in the lab where I was studying condensation of water on a hydrophobic aluminum surface. Moisture in the air condensed on the cooled surface, beading like pearls instead of spreading out due to its water repellant nature. Each droplet is less than 1mm in diameter.
The protruding bump on the surface is revealed by the big circle in the image. In order to get the bump’s apex and surrounding flat regions in focus I used a small aperture. As the water and aluminium are so reflective it was a challenge to achieve a uniform illumination that was strong enough without causing too much glare.’
