Mandy says:
‘Photographing oil droplets floating on water can create some unique and beautiful abstract imagery.

Working from my home studio, I poured a couple of inches of water into a glass dish and added a few drops of oil and a small drop of washing up liquid to break the oil into smaller drops, a gentle stir and then I waited for the oil to settle once again on the water surface. To create the colours in the image I placed brightly coloured pieces of paper below the container. A desk lamp at the side was my main lighting source. With my camera mounted on the tripod and its centre column repositioned horizontally to shoot the scene from above I began to experiment with exposure settings until I reached a pleasing result. I swirled the oil about from time to time to change the content before me and shot a series of images of the floating oil. ’
