Adrian Davies | Lesser Pond Sedge Dispersing Pollen

Name: Adrian Davies
Picture title: Lesser Pond Sedge Dispersing Pollen
Category: Plants & Fungi
Occupation: Nature photographer, author and lecturer

Adrian says:
‘The image shows pollen being discharged from a specimen of Pond Sedge (Carex acutiformis) taken from my garden pond. It was shot in controlled conditions in a studio. The specimen needed to be selected on the right day when it was ‘ripe’ enough to emit the pollen (normally dispersed by the wind). Two small flash guns were used to backlight the pollen, and another to provide some detail in the front. The duration of the flashes was approximately 1/10,000th second. When ready, the specimen was tapped with a pencil to discharge the pollen.’
