Lizzie says:
‘An intricate network of lochans intersperses the rocky, lunar landscape on the east coast of the Isle of Harris. These provide the perfect habitat for aquatic plants, such as water lilies, reeds and bog bean. There’s one lochan I return to every year in early autumn, both by myself and with our workshop group, and each time I notice how a week here or there can make such a difference to the form and colour of the plants. My preference is for a still day – on this occasion, there was a fair bit of sun. The water reflected the blue of the sky and the lily was golden in hue. I chose to discard the colours, focusing on the form of the lily and strands, with a black & white conversion.’

Technical information:
Sony A7Rii
Zeiss Batis 135mm f/2.8
ISO 1000
1/125 sec
Accessories: None
Post processing: Lightroom, Photoshop and converted to B&W with a preset I created in Silver Efex Pro – perhaps significantly, I’ve called the preset ‘dark pool’! I’ve done a bit of gardening with the clone tool to remove a few flecks and a couple of strands from the water — the very dark blacks also help to obscure some of the under water details.
