Emanuele Biggi | Moss with Eyes
Name: Emanuele Biggi
Picture title: Moss with Eyes
Occupation: Naturalist and conservation photographer, Italian tv presenter
‘I shot this image on an expedition to the Eastern forests of Madagascar in 2017, where I was trying to document all the amazing mimetic animals I could find in the remaining primary tropical forest of this beautiful island. Seeing a Mossy leaf-tailed gecko (Uroplatus sikorae) like this during the day was really tricky, because they just blend into their environment so perfectly. The fringes along the edge of their body make every cast shadow disappear, allowing them to become part of the tree trunk and moss. Only their eyes, if wide open, can betray their presence.
This shot was taken close to the Andasibe-Mantadia National Park, where the survival of these amazing creatures is threatened by deforestation and only the Park’s presence can save them from future extinction.’
