We are proud to have SIGMA UK support Close-up Photographer of the Year.
SIGMA is a relatively small, family owned company based in Aizu, Japan. Almost everything the company creates is handcrafted in Aizu, including the grinding of lenses, moulding of parts, and assembly of products.
SIGMA is renowned for the quality of its lenses, but the company also produces award-winning digital cameras and a wide range of accessories.
The overall winner of Close-up Photographer of the Year will be awarded a SIGMA sd Quattro camera and SIGMA 70mm F2.8 DG MACRO Art lens. The winner of Young CUPOTY will win a SIGMA 70mm F2.8 DG MACRO Art lens. You can read more about the prizes below, along with some of our favourite SIGMA products.
SIGMA 70mm F2.8 DG MACRO | Art
The first macro lens in SIGMA’s high performance Art lineup, the 70mm F2.8 DG Macro Art lens offers stunning resolution, and 1:1 (life-size) reproduction. The lens is compatible with full frame and APS-C sized sensors and is available in a Canon, Sony or Sigma mount.
Both the overall winner of Close-up Photographer of the Year and the winner of Young Close-up Photographer of the Year will be awarded a SIGMA 70mm F2.8 DG MACRO Art lens.
SIGMA sd Quattro camera
The sd Quattro features SIGMA’s unique Foveon X3 Quattro direct image sensor to capture images with a 39-megapixel-equivalent resolution. The camera has a Focus peaking function and a slightly smaller sensor than the sd Quattro H, making it ideal for close-up photography.
The overall winner of Close-up Photographer of the Year will be awarded a SIGMA sd Quattro.
SIGMA APO MACRO 180mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM
SIGMA’s flagship macro lens boasts a focal length of 180mm, making it ideal for keeping your distance from timid creatures such as butterflies and bugs.
This telephoto lens is designed for full-frame sensors, but can also be used with smaller APS-C sensors, resulting in an effective increase in focal length of 260mm (with most cameras). The lens offers 1:1 (life-size) reproduction.
If you’d like something a little shorter, there’s always the SIGMA APO MACRO 150mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM, which also offers 1:1 (life-size) reproduction.
Both lenses are available in Canon, Nikon and Sigma mounts.
SIGMA MACRO 105mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM
SIGMA’s 105mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM MACRO lens is a classic, and remains a much-loved addition to many photographer’s kit bags (including CUPOTY’s co-founder Tracy Calder).
This medium telephoto macro lens is super sharp, offers 1:1 (life-size) reproduction, and represents great value for money.
SIGMA Contemporary lenses
Within Sigma’s Contemporary range of lenses there are three zooms with a macro function. These allow you to shoot a variety of subjects without having to switch lenses. Take your pick from the:
Teleconverters fit between the lens and camera body to provide an economical way of increasing the effective focal length of a lens. With a greater working distance, you can maintain a suitable distance from sensitive subjects such as insects and reptiles.
Designed for SIGMA’s new line of lenses, the TC-2001 (£379) offers 2x focal length magnification, while the TC-1401 (£299) offers 1.4x focal length magnification. Both are available in Canon, Nikon and Sigma mounts.
SIGMA EM-140 DG Macro Flash
Designed to work with most popular DSLRs, the SIGMA EM-140 DG is ideal for photographing subjects in fine detail. The dual flash tubes can be fired simultaneously or separately to create different lighting effects. It has a guide number (GN) of 14 w/ISO 100.
