Ellen says:
‘While red trillium (Trillium erectum) is the most prominent species in this image, spring beauty (Claytonia virginica), Christmas fern (Polystichum acrostichoides), and false Solomon’s seal (Maianthemum racemosum) are also pictured. These species are spring ephemerals, and as such, they complete their lifecycles before the trees fully leaf out. While this fast-paced strategy benefits the plants, it’s challenging for me as the photographer. I have found out the hard way that a given plant might only be ‘perfect’ for a day or two, so capturing entire scenes like this one at American Legion State Forest, Connecticut, USA is a constant race against time. While plants may not move, they’re still dynamic and ever changing.’
