‘This is a fragment of a glacial cave in Vatnajökull National Park, southeast Iceland. By showing the amazing features of the ancient ice, I hope to raise awareness of global warming. Over the last three winters I’ve visited several ice caves in Vatnajökull and experienced first-hand how much the environment is changing, and how fast the glaciers are retreating. When the temperature oscillates around zero, melting and freezing of the ice walls alternate, creating a variety of textures. Here a small cavity in the ice looks like an eye, expressing sadness for the loss of the glaciers.

The compacted old ice absorbs red light waves and reflects blue, but the caves are often dark inside and the only light comes from various holes (and the entrance). The light is very directional, producing strong contrast and reflections.’
