Judith:
‘This is part of an ongoing project in which I’m making detailed images of the beached seaweed at Kearney Point, on the Ards Peninsula in Northern Ireland. My aim is to create beautiful abstracts from something that doesn’t seem at first sight to be particularly promising for a photographer – rolls of dull-looking, sometimes smelly kelp and wrack washed in on the tide. Up close, though, there are dramatic and elegant mini still lifes to be found within the piles of seaweed. Every time I visit, the seaweed is different, depending on the tides, the recent weather and the season.

I work with natural light and shoot without moving anything from wherever nature has placed it. In this image, my eye was drawn to the undulating lines of the overlapping layers of kelp, with their texture like crumpled raw silk, and the punctuation mark of the tiny white stem caught in their folds.’
