Every November we run the CUPOTY CHALLENGE – our themed contest that runs alongside Close-up Photographer of the Year.

For the last couple of years we've asked the community to decide what that theme might be.

You've chosen One Colour FrameTwo of a KindMinimalWater and Something Beautiful so far, which has created some amazing galleries and received some great press attention. The winners gallery is also included in the CUPOTY ebook.

As in previous years, the winner and a selection of finalists will be revealed in Amateur Photographer magazine, with the winner also receiving a £300 cash prize.

The CHALLENGE is open to everyone of any age from any country, but images must be close-up, macro or micro.

Pictures can be of any subject, taken with a camera, phone, scanner or microscope.

Please vote for your favourite theme from the two choices below and the one that gets the most votes by the end of Tuesday 28th October will be this year's theme.

Choose your theme for the 2025 CUPOTY CHALLENGE

  1. Death & Decay
For photographs of any animal, plant, fungi, landscape detail, ecosystem, habitat, object or material that is in a state of decay, is dying or dead. Or if something in the natural world is predating something else. Or an image that suggests this theme in a less direct way.

  2. The Colour Green
For photographs that are mostly filled with green or different shades of green, or where the main subject or key focus point of the image is green. It could be an accent in the frame, but that accent is the whole point of the picture.
